SELF-DRIVE HOLIDAYS IN THAILAND

GENERAL

Asian Trails, in cooperation with the Budget Car & Truck Rental offer very favorable car-rental rates for exclusive self-drive holiday makers in Thailand.  We offer two aspects of self-drive program, by holiday makers own travel plans with a minimum of three days car rental, and by the eight prearranged itineraries including car rental and hotel accommodation with different routes to the central, north and south of Thailand.    In complete contrast to the sometimes chaotic traffic situation in Bangkok, travel on upcountry roads all over Thailand is indeed most enjoyable and traffic is relatively light.  It is usually not much of a problem for foreign tourists to acquaint to driving on the left side of the road, and Thai people are known to be most helpful in case of any break-downs or other problems.

Driving in Thailand

Thailand has a good up-to-date network of well maintained roads and highways between all main centers.  Much of the north-south route is dual carriage way.  Road signage follows international convention and is in both Thai and English.  Night driving is not recommended on the open road due to heavy truck traffic, who tend to have a poor respect for cars.  Motor bikes can on occasion be a hazard, particularly as they are often ridden into oncoming traffic.  Driving on the more major routes outside Bangkok and around resort areas is both a safe and an enjoyable experience.  A self-drive holiday offers the opportunity to experience wonderful Thai culture and the opportunity for travelers to stop as long as they like at the many points of interest in the Kingdom.

Fuel Availability and Prices

Petrol in Thailnd comes in unleaded grades and is sold by the litre.  Petrol and diesel costs between Baht 30 and Baht 35 per litre.  Prices are usually higher in country areas. Petrol stations are plentiful but trading hours vary.

Road Rules

Thailand drives on the right-hand side of the road.  The maximum limit in cities and towns is 50 km/h and 110 km/h on country highways, unless signs indicate otherwise. Strict drink-driving laws apply and random breath testing, the checking of blood alcohol levels is conducted in all Thailand province.  It is compulsory for drivers and passengers to wear seat belts at all times.

Budget reserves the right to charge the renter for any traffic infringement notices, parking fines or unreported vehicle or third party damage.
